Working or studying in China: paid internships and temporary work experience

There are two real ways for someone from Latin America to work or intern in China with serious backing: the Co-Op university-industry programs and direct placement in Chinese companies with an interest in Latin America. This guide explains both, what they ask for, and the conditions for a conversation.

1. The Co-Op route (universities)

The NICE/JITRI Co-Op program alternates study with real work: paid internships of 3 to 6 months in top-tier companies and research institutes in China, in fields like advanced materials, energy and environment, manufacturing, biotechnology and ICT. The reference stipend is US$800 to US$900 per month. Universities such as the University of Waterloo, the University of Toronto and Brunel University London already run the format.

The hard condition: Co-Op requires a signed agreement with the student's university, and the university must carry a certain prestige. It is not an individual application program. Alternatives without an agreement can be discussed, but only when there is a serious intention to collaborate long term, for example a university that wants to build the bridge permanently.

Who it is for: undergraduate and graduate students of universities with their own weight, and universities that want to open the channel for their students. If you write as a university, do it from the office that leads internationalization.

2. The direct route (professionals)

For professionals who want temporary work experience in China, the route is Chinese companies looking at Latin America: in particular second-generation companies (heirs of large family business groups) that are internationalizing and need people who understand the region.

The condition: the internship must carry an objective of future collaboration with the company, typically its entry into Latin America. It is not temporary work for the salary: it is a bridge. There is already a concrete case: a person did an internship under this scheme and went back home with a job in the company's regional operation.

Who it is for: professionals with native Spanish, functional English and something to offer (industry, sales, operations, engineering), who can picture themselves working with that company when it lands in LatAm.

3. What is asked in return

  • Verifiable seriousness: references, a track record, and a clear reason for China.
  • Full-time commitment during the period.
  • A declared intention to collaborate afterwards: the internship is the start of a relationship, not a CV item.

4. How to start

Write to [email protected] with subject "Talent". If you are a student or professional: who you are, what you study or where you work, what you want to learn in China and where your future collaboration points. If you write from a university: the office, the concrete interest and how advanced the internal discussion is. The usual reply conditions apply: we reply as far as capacity allows, and priority goes to the cases with real fit.
